Welcome

Myself and Dr. Bob; I'm on the left!

Greetings,

Welcome to the e-Portfolio of me, Joe McCormick, where you will find a collection of my writing and projects. The purpose of this portfolio is to create a space where I can share some of my best academic writings so far, continue to add new entries, and reflect on the work I have done. This ePortfolio is used as a standard for Salt Lake Community College’s General Education ePortfolio requirement. However, this website contains more than just academic writing; I have included work of other styles in order to showcase various genres of writing. As a personal notion, I believe our ability to write increases with the continued practice of myriad styles. In line with this, I have included a selection of short stories I have written, some of which were entered into SLCC’s 2011 Chapbook Competition, and What the Tech?!, a technology-based newspaper column I created that has been printed in SLCC’s student paper, The Globe.

About Me

I was born in The Dalles, OR but moved to Eugene, OR when I was 8. A year after high school I made the decision to move in with a long time friend living in Salt Lake City, UT. As a large part of my personal background is heavily based in self-taught computer sciences, I quickly found work at multiple call centers working as an over-the-phone computer technician. During this time I earned my A+ certificate which certifies me to work on and understand all the components of computer operating systems and peripherals. While I enjoyed this work, I quickly tired of it. As I reconsidered my options, furthering my education became a significant option.

My first article, woohoo!

In Fall 2008 I enrolled at Salt Lake Community College, unknowing of what I wanted to excel in. After taking a year of general classes I decided that I wanted to focus my attention towards a degree in English. Writing has always been an interest of mine, but it wasn’t until I started going to college that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in it. I moved back to Oregon for one year and attended Lane Community College for the ’09-’10 year, gaining an eclectic experience of creative writing and literature classes; I also picked up the guitar and salsa dancing!

After moving back to Salt Lake City for the ’10-’11 school year, I found a position at SLCC’s Student Writing Center as a peer tutor.  I have greatly enjoyed the privilege and experience of counseling others in their writing, and plan to continue for some time. Surrounding myself with academics and those who have similar interests motivates me even more to achieve my goals. Since returning to school, I have earned an Associates of Science in English and a Certificate of Completion in Writing. These accomplishments have interested and geared me for teaching English. I am currently a student at the University of Utah working towards a TESOL certificate and will complete it in May 2012.
